THE Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has suspended allowances of all striking doctors effective July 1, 2012.
A statement issued on Monday by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ms Regina Kikuli, said that the strike of the doctors had not only jeopardized health and lives of the patients but also goes contrary to their professional ethics.
She stated that the suspension of allowances would remain pending until Tanzania Medical Council decides on complaints forwarded to the council by the ministry on strikes.
The acting permanent secretary also stated further that while waiting for the council’s decisions, other public service procedures would be taken by relevant appointing authorities according to the relevant laws and regulations.
Ms Kikuli revealed that the striking 372 interns out of 763 in various hospitals in the country had been recalled by her ministry. Meanwhile, the Chairman of Muhimbili Board of Trustees, Prof Joseph Kuzilwa, yesterday said that all doctors have resumed duty and that services are at full swings.
